Frequently asked questions about ÀϾÅÆ·²è's music lessons

• I'm interested in pop, not classical. Can I learn in the style I want?

  Absolutely! We offer individual lessons in a range of styles and genres. At the start of your lessons, your instructor will work with you to develop a customized lesson plan based on your interests, goals, and level.

• Do I need experience to take individual lessons?

  Most students who enroll in individual music lessons have some familiarity with music-making, even if minimal. They may have taken lessons in the past, have played a different instrument, or have sung or played in ensembles at the high school level. For those completely new to music, we suggest group lessons in voice, piano, guitar, or violin.

• Do I have to pay more in tuition to take lessons? What about fees?

  Even if you've already reached your 18-credit cap, music lessons can be taken as your 19th and 20th credits with no additional tuition charge. We do charge a separate lesson fee as listed; however, those unable to pay may apply for our Lesson Assistance Program to have their fee reduced. • Will my lessons be graded?

  Lessons are graded and count in your GPA. They provide credits toward the ÀϾÅÆ·²è Plan Fine Arts (F) requirement. The grading rubric emphasizes consistent attendance and preparation of assignments, not level of achievement. The Individual Lesson does have a "final exam" that is a private performance for the faculty of a short piece or demonstration of the student's current work.

• Do I have to own an instrument to take lessons?

  The music department has a substantial inventory of instruments to loan to students. If we can't take care of your needs, there are rental instruments available at our local music stores. Beginning classes in guitar and violin provide instruments, and of course the department practice rooms are full of pianos!

• How do I know who my instructor is?

  Each Individual Music Lesson is taught by a specialist in that field. Meet and read about our professional staff of artist-teachers who teach private lessons at ÀϾÅÆ·²è!

• Will there be opportunities to perform in recitals? Do I have to perform in a recital if I take individual lessons?

  There are plenty of opportunities to perform in recitals — many students love to play in the beautiful acoustics of Sundin Music Hall. You are not, however, required to perform in public. For students who do perform, the department provides piano accompaniment.
